FAQ

Questions before your first cup? Here’s what to know about our coffee, independent testing, and brewing options.

About our coffee

What makes Alex’s coffee low acid?

We use convection roasting and a slower, lower-temperature finish to reduce chlorogenic acids, naturally occurring compounds in coffee. We then measure those compounds through independent laboratory testing.

See how our coffee is tested.

Do you measure your coffee’s pH?

Yes. Our published independent lab report recorded pH values from 5.40 to 5.77 across the four coffees tested. Results vary by coffee and sample.

pH is one part of the picture. We also measure chlorogenic acids, so our testing looks beyond a single acidity number.

Does low acid mean less flavor?

No. Low acid doesn’t mean a weak cup. We offer medium and dark roasts, along with Half Caff and Decaf, so you can choose the coffee that suits your taste.

Is Alex’s coffee tested for mold, mycotoxins, and heavy metals?

Yes. Our published independent lab report includes testing for yeast and mold, mycotoxins such as ochratoxin A and aflatoxins, and heavy metals including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury.

We share the results so you can see what was tested and the amounts reported.

Do you test for pesticides?

Yes. In our published independent lab report, all tested pesticides were below the laboratory’s quantitation limits, meaning they were below the amounts the test could reliably measure.

Review the pesticide testing results.

Is Alex’s coffee organic?

Yes. Alex’s coffee is made with USDA Organic Arabica beans.

Does low acid mean acid-free?

No. Coffee contains naturally occurring acids. Low acid doesn’t mean all of those acids have been removed.

Can I drink Alex’s if I have acid reflux or a sensitive stomach?

Many customers tell us Alex’s is easier on their stomach than their usual coffee. Our independent testing measures acidity and chlorogenic acid levels, but everyone’s tolerance is different. Low acid doesn’t mean acid-free or a guarantee against heartburn.

Is low-acid coffee better for my teeth?

Alex’s is tested for acidity, but we haven’t tested its effects on tooth enamel or staining. We can’t promise fewer stains or less enamel wear.

Choose your cup

What’s the difference between Rise & Shine and French Roast?

Rise & Shine is a medium roast. French Roast is a dark roast with a deeper, bolder flavor.

Prefer a medium roast? Start with Rise & Shine. Like a darker cup? Go with French Roast. Adjust your coffee-to-water ratio to find your preferred strength.

What is Half Caff?

Half Caff blends caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee for less caffeine than our fully caffeinated options. It still contains caffeine.

How is your decaf made?

Our decaf uses the Swiss Water® Process to remove caffeine without chemical solvents. Decaf still contains a small amount of caffeine.

Brewing and storage

How can I brew Alex’s coffee?

Brew with a drip coffee maker, French press, pour-over, moka pot, or espresso machine. Choose whole beans and grind them for your brewing method, or check that your preground coffee has the appropriate grind.

We also offer single-serve pods and steep bags. Follow the package instructions for those formats.

How many servings are in a 12 oz bag?

A 12 oz bag contains about 340 grams of coffee. Using 15 grams per brew gives you approximately 22 servings. Your total will vary with your recipe and mug size.

How should I store my coffee?

Keep your coffee tightly sealed in a cool, dry place, away from heat, sunlight, and moisture. Follow the best-by date on your package.
